Please wait…Young healers find meaning in touching lives
Twenty-three year old Jay Jannatin has a healing touch.
A young reflexologist in Basilan, Jay is a graduate of ELSA's Integrated Technical Education program in Basilan, Mindanao. A 10-month program for the out of school youth, courses include Reflexology, Hair Science, Garments, Electronics, Food Technology, and Welding. Consuelo Foundation's Alternative Learning System program and Life Skills Training are integrated throughout the course to develop well-rounded youth fit for employment.
"I learned about this program from the barangay (community)," said Jay. "I decided to join because during that time I had just dropped out from college because of financial reasons. So when I heard of this free training, I grabbed the chance instead of being idle at home."
Reflexology, Jay and her fellow trainees soon learned, was not simply knowing which muscle or nerve to touch, but also a personal responsibility. Beyond having free training, it's the appreciation of the community and being able to serve that touches these young reflexologists. "It feels good when our neighbors start knocking on our doors and relying on us for treatment," said 21-year-old JR Bons, another reflexology graduate of the program. "Some time ago, I had two patients who had rheumatism, and they come to me every morning until they were healed. I'm happy that I was able to help with the skills I have learned."
Through their sincerity and compassion, these young healers are able to heal and touch the hearts of their communities.
