Mindanao youth leaders lead development projects in their schools

Mindanao youth leaders lead development projects in their schools

April 15, 2007

After their project management training last December 2006, twenty-six ELSA young leaders began leading in implementing their proposed development projects for their schools. These young leaders, coming from 9 schools in the provinces of Maguindanao, Shariff Kabunsuan, and Lanao del Sur, received a small matching grant from ELSA's In-School Youth Engagement Program to jumpstart the implementation of the project plans they have developed after training. This also serves as an opportunity for the EYLC alumni to put their leadership and management skills into practice.

Projects vary from fence renovation, laboratory equipment provision, to garbage receptacle constructions. Teachers, school officials, and parents also provided support and guidance to ensure smooth implementation and sustainability. In Malabang National Highschool, local government officials also provided support financial support and fundraising assistance in helping the young leaders provide a water fountain for the school. In the case of Sarilikha National High school, the community members helped the young leaders in building garbage receptacles in the school. Meanwhile, the other projects are still on going and expected to be done in three months' time.

ELSA's In-School Youth Engagement Program aims to engage and empower the young leaders of Mindanao through increased engagement in their respective schools and communities. Ayala Foundation spearheads this program.
