ELSA mainstreams peace education in text2teach

April 15, 2007

Together with the Department of Education, ELSA is currently developing text2teach Grades Five and Six English lessons with peace promotion themes. This initiative is in response to Executive Order 570, which mandates the DepED to mainstream Peace Education in both formal and non-formal education system through the use of peace education teaching exemplars.

A 3-day workshop was held with DepED officials and subject content specialists last February 28 to March 2, 2007 to integrate these Grades Five and Six English lessons in the ELSA text2teach Teacher’s Guides. Mr. Michael Frank Alar of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP) served as a resource person in the development of these lessons. Specific peace concepts such as living in harmony with nature, respect for cultural diversity, finding inner peace, and the like will be delivered through the use of songs, storytelling, and other experiential activities. The lessons have been finalized after a series of pre-tests and field validation of the prototypes. Accompanying audio/video packages are presently being produced.

With the inclusion of these English lessons with peace promotion themes, text2teach shall have a total of 490 lessons to be used by the 122 projects schools in Maguindanao, Cotabato, South Cotabato and Shariff Kabunsuan starting School Year 2007-08. These lessons will also be used by additional 13 text2teach schools in Cotabato City.
