Please wait…200 Youth leaders find peace, solidarity in C.A.M.P.
213 youth leaders from all over Mindanao gathered for the Culture Across Mindanao Program (CAMP), a peace and understanding camp for the youth. The youth leaders, coming from diverse religious, cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds -- Christian, Muslim, Indigenous people – attended the five-day camp to promote inter-religious, inter-cultural and transformative experiences geared towards appreciation and understanding of the cultures in the region.
Two separate camps were conducted to accommodate youth camp participants. Held at The Farm @ Carpenter Hill, Koronadal City, the first camp kicked off last May 25-29, 2009 bringing together 108 young leaders from Central Mindanao and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The second camp, held last June 1-5, 2009 gathered105 youths from Zamboanga Peninsula and the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
Several activities for peace and cultural understanding was held in the camp, such as group discussions on the specific roles of the youth in achieving peace, leadership and teambuilding exercises. All in all, the camp aims to: (1) To reflect on one’s role as youth on the pressing issues and concerns in Mindanao through lectures and group-dynamic activities; (2) To share religious and cultural experiences and lessons learned between and among the communities in the peace camp; and (3) To challenge and commit oneself to take concrete actions in continuing and strengthening the peace efforts in their respective communities and Mindanao as a whole.
“This is just the beginning, the bigger challenge in promoting peace awaits when we get back to our own communities,” said Rosalie Lipura, one of the campers.
The Culture Across Mindanao Program is a project of the US Embassy; United States Agency for International Development USAID-funded Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills-2 (Equalls2) Project.and is organized by the Youth Leadership Development Unit of Ayala Foundation Inc.
